The hydroxyl group in the backbone of poly(allylamine hydrochloride) - MW 450,000 provides chemical stability to the molecule. Poly(allylamine hydrochloride) - MW 450,000 particles are less than 1 micron in size and have been shown to have a significant effect on bacterial growth. This polymer has also been shown to produce microcapsules containing an antimicrobial agent that can kill bacteria on surfaces.
