Isopentane

Description:

Isopentane, also known as 2-methylbutane, is an organic compound with the molecular formula C5H12. It is a branched-chain alkane, characterized by its five carbon atoms and twelve hydrogen atoms. Isopentane is a colorless, flammable liquid at room temperature, with a boiling point of approximately 27.8°C (82°F) and a melting point of around -159.5°C (-255.1°F). It is insoluble in water but soluble in organic solvents, making it useful in various applications. Isopentane is commonly utilized as a solvent in laboratories, as a blowing agent in the production of polystyrene foam, and in the petrochemical industry. Its low boiling point and volatility make it suitable for use in refrigeration and as a fuel component. Additionally, isopentane is a significant intermediate in organic synthesis and can be produced through the catalytic isomerization of n-pentane. Due to its flammability, it must be handled with care, following appropriate safety protocols to prevent fire hazards.
