Dapsone

Description:
Dapsone, with the CAS number 80-08-0, is an aromatic sulfonamide antibiotic primarily used in the treatment of leprosy and certain types of dermatitis, such as dermatitis herpetiformis. It is a white to off-white crystalline powder that is slightly soluble in water and more soluble in organic solvents like ethanol and acetone. Dapsone functions by inhibiting bacterial folate synthesis, thereby exerting its antimicrobial effects. Its chemical formula is C12H12N2O2S, and it has a molecular weight of approximately 240.3 g/mol. Dapsone is known for its anti-inflammatory properties, making it effective in treating autoimmune skin conditions. While generally well-tolerated, it can cause side effects such as hemolytic anemia, especially in individuals with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency. Monitoring of blood parameters is recommended during treatment. Dapsone is often used in combination with other medications to enhance therapeutic efficacy and reduce the risk of resistance.
