Decalin

Description:
Decalin, or decahydronaphthalene, is a bicyclic organic compound with the chemical formula C10H18. It consists of two fused cyclohexane rings and exists in two isomeric forms: cis-decalin and trans-decalin, which differ in the orientation of the hydrogen atoms at the fusion point of the rings. Decalin is a colorless, flammable liquid with a distinctive odor, and it is insoluble in water but soluble in organic solvents. It has a relatively low boiling point and a moderate density compared to water. Decalin is primarily used as a solvent in chemical reactions and as a precursor in the synthesis of various organic compounds. Additionally, it serves as a model compound in studies of hydrocarbon behavior and is utilized in the production of certain polymers and resins. Due to its flammability and potential health effects upon inhalation or skin contact, appropriate safety measures should be taken when handling decalin in laboratory or industrial settings.
