5-Ethyl-4-hydroxy-2-methyl-3(2H)-furanone is a colorless liquid that has a fruity, sweet odor. It is used in the manufacture of flavors and fragrances. 5-Ethyl-4-hydroxy-2-methyl-3(2H)-furanone can be obtained by the reaction of butanedione with dilute sulfuric acid, followed by treatment with an absorber containing propylene glycol and 4-ethyl-2methoxyphenol.
