Hepsulfam is a covalent linker that has been designed to target the cb2 receptor in cancer cells. Hepsulfam binds to DNA duplexes and prevents transcription of genes. It also binds to fatty acids in the cell membrane, inhibiting the growth of bacteria. The analog has shown an ability to kill probiotic bacteria, which may be due to its binding with fatty acids in the bacterial membrane. Hepsulfam can also form covalent complexes with metal surfaces, such as copper and iron ions, which are intracellular targets. The covalent linkages are stable under physiological conditions and can be detected by specific antibodies. Hepsulfam has been shown to inhibit tumor growth in animal models of cancer. This drug was found to bind specifically with a three-compartment model of the cell nucleus or cytoplasm, suggesting that it does not cross membranes easily.
