MIF-I, the C-terminal tripeptide of oxytocin, has been shown to be active in numerous behavioral tests and clinical situations.

Mating pheromone of mating type α cells of S. cerevisiae. This factor inhibits DNA synthesis, thereby preventing cell division of mating type a cells. The hydrophobic peptide binds to a class D G-protein-coupled receptor Ste2p.

For exerting its anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory activity, the peptide hormone thymulin, pEAKSQGGSN, requires the presence of Zn(II). Thymulin showed promising results in experimental models of lung diseases as well as potential as an analgesic peptide.

ANP/ANF is synthesized in cardiac myocytes and is primarily released in response to atrial wall stretching and intravascular volume expansion. The peptide signals via the guanylate cyclase-linked natriuretic peptide receptor A (NPR-A) and plays an important role in blood pressure regulation and blood volume homeostasis. ANP/ANF exerts vasodilatory, diuretic, natriuretic, anti-inflammatory, antifibrotic and antimitogenic effects. As BNP, ANP stimulates lipolysis in adipocytes. Millucci et al. studied the aggregation behavior of αANP, which may play a role in congestive heart failure.

Urodilatin, a 32 amino acid peptide, has originally been isolated from human urine. It belongs to the family of natriuretic-vasorelaxant peptides earlier found in heart atria. Cedidi et al. showed that urodilatin infusion may represent a concept for the treatment of therapy-resistant acute renal failure after liver transplantation. C-ANF 4-23 binds with high affinity to approximately 99% of ANF receptors in the isolated perfused rat kidney. It competes effectively with biologically active atrial peptides for binding sites but is devoid of agonist or antagonist action on the generation of cGMP in vascular smooth muscle and endothelial cells in culture.

Prepro-atrial natriuretic factor (26-55) (human) (NT-pro-ANP (1-30)) is one of four peptide hormones derived from the atrial natriuretic prohormone. It is also known as long acting natriuretic peptide. The peptide has potent vasodilatory properties equal to atrial natriuretic factor. Vasodilation is associated with a 4-5 fold increase in cyclic GMP levels due to activation of particulate guanylate cyclase activity. Like prepro-atrial natriuretic factor (56-92) and kaliuretic peptide it is present in higher concentration in individuals with congestive heart failure. It causes the maximal increase in prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) levels of the three peptides. The known increase in PGE2 in chronic heart failure may be in part secondary to these peptides.

Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is a member of the neurotrophin family. Its expression in the human central nervous system is altered in neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. BDNF promotes survival of dopaminergic neurons and protects against Aβ-induced neurotoxicity in vitro and in vivo.
