CAS:Hydroxy metronidazole is a nitroimidazole drug that is used as an antibiotic against bacterial infections. It is also used for the treatment of protozoal infections and as a pre- and post-operative medication. Hydroxy metronidazole has synergistic effects with ceftriaxone, which are due to its ability to inhibit DNA synthesis by chemical inhibition of bacterial DNA gyrase. The drug has been shown to be genotoxic in humans, mice, and rats. It can lead to genotoxic effects in the form of chromosomal aberrations in human lymphocytes and micronuclei in the bone marrow cells of mice following acute exposure. Hydroxy metronidazole also inhibits protein synthesis in bacteria by binding to ribosomes at the A site, blocking entry of amino acid into the ribosome. This leads to bacterial cell death by inhibiting protein synthesis.
