:Sulfamethoxazole
Description:
Sulfamethoxazole is a sulfonamide antibiotic commonly used in combination with trimethoprim to treat various bacterial infections. It is characterized by its ability to inhibit bacterial growth by interfering with the synthesis of folic acid, which is essential for bacterial cell metabolism. The chemical formula of sulfamethoxazole is C10H11N3O3S, and it features a sulfonamide group, an aromatic ring, and a methoxy group, contributing to its pharmacological properties. This compound is typically administered orally and is well-absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract. Sulfamethoxazole is known for its broad-spectrum activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, making it effective in treating urinary tract infections, respiratory infections, and certain types of gastrointestinal infections. However, it may cause side effects such as allergic reactions, gastrointestinal disturbances, and, in rare cases, hematological issues. Due to the potential for bacterial resistance, its use is often guided by susceptibility testing and is typically reserved for specific infections where it has proven efficacy.

CAS:Sulfamethoxazole is a synthetic bacterostatic antibiotic that is effective against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. The antibiotic functions by inhibiting growth by interfering with folic acid synthesis, which bacteria need to synthesise nucleic acids. Sulfamethoxazole competes with para-aminobenzoic acid (structural analog) for binding to the enzyme dihydropteroate synthetase, blocking the production of dihydrofolate that is needed for bacterial folic acid synthesis. Sulfamethoxazole is a sulfonamide that is associated with poor water solubility. Two structural requirements are needed for the antibiotic to function:1) a sulfonamide group2) a free amino group, at positions 1 and 4, respectively.Formula:C10H11N3O3SPurity:Min. 98 Area-%Color and Shape:PowderMolecular weight:253.28 g/molSulfamethoxazole
