Paraoxon

Description:
Paraoxon, with the CAS number 311-45-5, is an organophosphate compound known primarily for its use as an insecticide and acaricide. It is a colorless to pale yellow liquid that is highly toxic, particularly as a nerve agent. Paraoxon acts as an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor, leading to the accumulation of acetylcholine in the synaptic cleft, which disrupts normal nerve function and can result in severe physiological effects, including respiratory failure and convulsions. The compound is soluble in organic solvents but has limited solubility in water. Paraoxon is also a metabolite of the pesticide parathion, which is converted into paraoxon in the body, contributing to its toxicity. Due to its hazardous nature, paraoxon is subject to strict regulations and safety measures in handling and usage. Proper protective equipment and protocols are essential when working with this substance to mitigate the risks associated with exposure.
